Man on copper wire charge

ALEXANDRA – Officers pounce on copper offloader, others flee.


A suspect who was arrested when found offloading suspected stolen copper wire from a truck is appearing in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said the accused claimed to have been offered the temporary offloading job by a gang of men along Old Pretoria Road at about midday on 8 July.

“When officers who were alerted to the suspicious truck approached, other men who were also offloading the truck fled and left [the suspect] alone. “A large amount of copper wire was found on the truck under a green plastic sail,” Malatji said.

The suspect claimed not to know the identity of his alleged accomplices and claimed to be a piece job seeker in the area.
