Playtime turns deadly

ALEXANDRA – Two children's playtime took a horrible turn.

One child is at a place of safety and another is dead after a bullet fired from a police woman’s official gun.

According to Alex Police Station spokesperson, Captain Stephen Malatji, the incident occurred midday on 18 August in East Bank. “The two, a 14-year-old child to the officer and the 12-year-old victim were playing at the older one’s home without adult supervision – with the mother in hospital for an undisclosed ailment,” Malatji said.

The 14-year-old is said to have taken the mother’s gun from a room. “As they played with it, a shot rang, hitting the 12-year-old in the eye.”

Neighbours alerted to the incident, helped to get the victim to Waterfall Hospital where he died overnight. The child charged with murder was taken to a place of safety and police guards were assigned to the mother who faces charges of negligence. The gun was retrieved.
