MC Weiler in line for yet another historic moment in the Discovery Alex Schools League 2019

ALEXANDRA -– The Discovery Alex U12 Schools League is nearing the completion of the group stages of the tournament and MC Weiler looks poised to defend the trophy for the second time in a row.

MC Weiler Primary School could break yet another record in the boys’ division of the Discovery Alex Primary Schools League as they are on course to defend the trophy for the second time in a row.

MC Weiler is the only school to have defended the trophy and twice in a row will be unprecedented.

Victory in the last two games of the group stages will ensure that MC Weiler is through to the quarter-finals of the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League and victory in the quarters, semis and final will ensure they are crowned kings of Alex football.

MC Weiler first won the trophy in 2015, and again in 2017 and defended it in 2018. No other school has won the trophy three times and if they go all the way this year, they will have won the trophy four times.

Currently, MC Weiler is the team to beat as they top the Group A standings with 10 points from four games, having won three and drawn one. Their nearest rival in the group is former perennial whipping boys, Ithute Primary School, which has nine points from four games, having won three and lost one.

The loss that Ithute suffered was incidentally inflicted by MC Weiler in a 2–0 victory in the opening rounds on 4 September. Former two-time champions, Iphutheng Primary School are still in with a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals, depending on how MC Weiler and Ithute perform in the last two matches.

Iphutheng has amassed seven points from four games, with two wins, one loss and one draw. In Group B, hard fighters Dr Knak Primary School who have never been in the final leads the pack with 12 points from an unblemished winning record in all their four games.

A distance from their heels is middle of the road performers over the years, Emfundisweni Primary School, with seven points from four games, having won two, lost one and drawn one. Ekukhanyisweni Primary School is also in with a chance for the quarter-finals as they are level on points with Emfundisweni.

There will be no room for errors in the last two games for Emfundisweni and Ekukhanyisweni if they want to progress. If they both win their remaining matches, then goal difference will come to play, if not the head-to-head game between themselves, which favours Ekukhanyisweni as they won it 1–0 on 11 September.

The final of the tournament is scheduled for 30 October at Number 3 Square Grounds.

In the girls’ division, MC Weiler is also in with a chance to defend the trophy they won last year, as they lead the Group A standings with 12 points from four straight wins. They are followed by Ekukhanyisweni with nine points from three wins and a single loss.

The Group B standings are dominated by Iphutheng with nine points from four games, having recorded only one loss. Their nearest rivals are Bovet, DH Carter and Zenzeleni, all with six points from four games with two wins and two losses apiece.
