Alexandra’s 11-year-old aspiring newsreader cannot wait for a seat behind the microphone

A young, aspiring newsreader from Alexandra is eager for an opportunity to showcase her news reading skills on radio or television.

Eleven-year-old Bonolo Maohludi’s mother, Teboho said her daughter fell in love with reading when she was very young. “I noticed something different with her when she was very young. She started falling in love with reading when she was only two years old. She would separate herself from other children and start reading aloud all alone,” Teboho said.

Bonolo describes herself as people’s person, outspoken and an eloquent speaker. “I want to become the youngest newsreader in the world. I’ve recently started teaching myself how to read and write other South African languages like Zulu and Sotho. I am ready to grab any chance if given by either a radio station or television station. I like reading news because they take you out of your world to others so that you learn how others live and what challenges they face,” she said.

At the age of seven, Bonolo started an anti-bullying campaign called after she was a victim of bullying at school. “Many children suffer bullying in school and they don’t speak out or report it.

When I was in Grade 1, I was bullied by my schoolmates. I realised it wasn’t a good thing to hide and decided to start the Bullying Must Fall campaign to raise awareness and encourage others to report if they are bullied. Bullying has negative effects on children’s performance at school and it can make one hate the school.”

The youngster concluded that she is still undecided when it comes to her career choice after school. “I have not yet decided on what I want to become or which profession to pursue when I complete my matric. I will only decide when I get to high school,” Bonolo concluded.
