Help feed Alex’s starving performing artists

ALEXANDRA – Vusanani Arts Alive, which recently held a fundraising concert, has appealed for more assistance to feed starving Alex artists.

Vusanani Arts Alive has appealed to non-profit organisations that ply their trade in the sphere of humanitarian aid and companies with corporate social investment programmes to come on board and help feed struggling Alex performing artists.

The call was made by Vusanani co-founder Hlehle Ngubane, whose organisation recently held a concert at the East Bank Hall in an effort to raise funds towards assisting these artists, but said the little they managed to raise would go a short distance and would not be enough to sustain the artists.

She soon after the concert, they held a meeting with the various artists and the loudest cry was that of assistance to put food on the table. “Most of these artists are breadwinners in their own right but are unable to secure any performing arts jobs due to the Covid-19 restrictions around mass gatherings.

“Some of them are young and never worked before so being an artist was the only hope for them since there is a serious problem with finding a job now after the coronavirus pandemic,” Ngubane said.

In an interview with Alex News, she said the pandemic had hit hard for many of the artists, most of whom found it difficult to put food on the table as they have no other income generation except through the performing arts.

“Some of them were working by day and performing after-hours hence they lost their day jobs which provided not just for themselves but their families too. Having lost their day job and with severe restrictions around mass gatherings, the artists have been dealt a severe blow.”
