Hospital staves off widespread hunger in Alex
ALEXANDRA -– Life Healthcare responds to the hunger crisis in Alexandra by donating food parcels to vulnerable community members.
Life Healthcare, a private global hospital group in South Africa came to the rescue of struggling community members in Alexandra with much-needed food parcels to stave off widespread hunger in the township.
The food donations were made by Gift of the Givers on behalf of the hospital as part of a drive to feed the hungry. Most of these people were the breadwinners who have lost their jobs due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and last month’s civil unrest which resulted in the burning down of malls and food shops in the township.
The hospital felt it needed to stand up and be counted with deliveries of food parcels in the two provinces that were affected by the riots, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
In Alexandra alone, the hospital delivered more than 300 food parcels consisting of non-perishables and high-protein foods which was enough to feed a family of four for four weeks.
“Our purpose at Life Healthcare remains making life better and being able to provide support and aid to vulnerable communities which is one of the ways that we can live this purpose.
“The Covid-19 pandemic and the unrest across our country has created a greater need for hunger alleviation and the support that we can provide will go a long way in assisting South Africans during these trying and hard times,” said Ansuyiah Padayachee, community and external affairs manager at Life Healthcare Group.
She said they had contracted the Gift of the Givers Foundation as their distribution agency to deliver some of these parcels in Alexandra were scores of hungry residents thronged the Number 3 Square Sports Ground on September 2 to receive the food parcels.
