Peace ambassador Thabo Mopasi appointed to lead WaterAid programmes in Alex
ALEXANDRA – The programmes aimed to assist the community and dispel myths about the Covid-19 pandemic.
Alexandra’s Thabo Mopasi (49) has been appointed by the Department of Water and Sanitation as its peace ambassador to help the department with its WaterAid programmes around the township.
As part of the Covid-19 response, WaterAid in South Africa has joined forces with the Department of Women, Youth, and People Living with Disabilities for programmes to distribute thousands of hygiene products including soaps, face masks, sanitisers, and sanitary pads to communities.
Speaking to Alex News Mopsasi said, “The programmes aimed at helping the community as well as help to remove stereotypes and misconceptions about the Covid-19 pandemic.
“So far with the Department of Water and Sanitation, we have embarked on several campaigns to clean up Juskei River park, Alexandra streets, and educate the community living around the river to guard it.”
Mopasi, who is also the historian of the township, said they have conducted workshops with the help of other stakeholders in the community such as Rays of Hope, Alex Men’s Forum, Sanca, Vuka Skhoko, Bokamoso Department of Social Development, Gogta, City of Johannesburg Sports Department and Migration Desk, all which are non-governmental organisations under the banner of Alexandra Local Drug Action Committee.
“Before getting a vaccination jab in your body understand your blood type first. Do not do things you don’t know because someone said you must be vaccinated then jump into oblivion leaving your children as orphans and family in problems of endless debts,” Mopasi said.
Shoki Malepe of the Department of Water and Sanitation and assistant director for the water sector describes Mopasi as one of the most essential leaders in Alex. “Mopasi has been our link to the community of Alex and he has contributed to lots of initiatives related to water and sanitation.
“He has a vision for a cleaner Alex, and we need people like Mopasi who can think on their feet and who are willing to work alongside different government organisations.”
