Alex to Sandton Rea Vaya route almost complete
ALEXANDRA – The Watt Interchange forms part of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C operation from Sandton to Alexandra.
The Watt Street Interchange project which will connect Alexandra with the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system and integrate the different modes of transportation in Joburg, is due to be completed by the end of the year.
The Watt Interchange forms part of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C operation from Sandton to Alexandra, along Rivonia Road and Katherine Drive, and the trunk route from Parktown to Alexandra, along Louis Botha Avenue.
On August 25, the MMC for Development Planning Thapelo Amad and the MMC for Transportation Nonhlanhla Makhuba, visited the site. The project is on track for completion, with 90% of the construction scope of works completed.
Amad said, “By late June, the project was supposed to be done but due to Covid-related reasons the country was under lockdown which caused delays in a sense that we could not finish in time.
“The project is progressing well in terms of completion and we plan to complete the entire project before year’s end.”
He added that they intended to complete 98% of the work by September. Construction work included demolishing the existing Watt Street bridge and interchange, and building a new east-west link from Rautenbach Avenue to Watt Street with a new intersection on Pretoria Main Road.
Makhuba concluded, “If we do not encounter any other barriers like covid, we definitely promise the residents that the BRT will be in operation by the end of the year.”
