Former Bafana Bafana player shot in Alexandra tavern

ALEXANDRA – Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect shot a third person on the scene before turning the gun on himself.


The South African Police Service has opened a case of murder, attempted murder and an inquest docket after a man allegedly shot three people including himself in Alexandra on December 30, at approximately 19:00.

It is reported that the suspect was carrying a firearm while chasing his girlfriend in a tavern in Alexandra. The owner of a tavern, who is believed to be the brother of the woman as well as another man attempted to stop the suspect. The tavern owner has been revealed to be former Bafana Bafana player, Maimane Phiri.

“The suspect shot Phiri in the arm and lower body and shot the other man on the upper body before turning the gun on himself, ” said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo in a statement released on 30 December.

All three men were taken to a hospital. The suspect and the other man died in hospital while the tavern owner was admitted in a serious but stable condition.

In an updated statement released on December 31, it states that preliminary investigation revealed that a third person was also shot by the suspect. He is in critical condition in hospital.

The case is still under investigation.
