Alex homeowner’s flooding nightmare may end

ALEXANDRA – Cllr Raphadu says he will personally see to it that JRA comes to the party to remedy the situation.

After 19 years of battling rainwater that floods her house, Far East Bank’s Ext 8 resident Nomvula Mazibuko’s nightmares may soon come to an end.

Mazibuko had been sent from pillar to post by four previous councillors including, allegedly, current Ward 105 councillor Tefo Raphadu. However, Raphadu has committed to pressuring the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to remedy what he described as ‘shoddy’ work that saw the agency approve the developments in the area without taking into consideration the need for stormwater drains.

Raphadu pointed out that the water that floods Mazibuko’s house actually comes from all over Tsutsumani via the streets. The water runs down the streets and gains momentum as it flows downhill to reach Mazibuko’s house, and then flows over a kerb that was built to try and stop the water from entering her house.

“I will personally see to it that JRA comes to the party to remedy the situation, sooner rather than later, as it is unattainable for her [Mazibuko] to continue to suffer like this. I have asked the JRA to find a solution to this matter,” Raphadu told Alex News in an interview.

Raphadu, who said he was responsible for building the kerb after Mazibuko had complained, accused other residents in the area of blocking one of the storm drains on one of the roads in the area that would have helped divert the water.
