Members of the Alexandra Property Owners Rights (Apor) demonstrated outside Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in support of one of their members who was appearing in court following a case that was opened against him by tenants.
Chairperson of Apor, Vakele Mbalukwana said the member had been accused of harassment, assault and allegedly making threats against the tenants.
“We are here not just to give support to our members but to also assert our rights as property owners in the township. We cannot be bulldozed by tenants who want to live for free and when we demand rental payment they then turn around and accuse us of harassment.”

Mbalukwana, whose organisation is a breakaway from Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association (Alpoa), said this was the third appearance in court of their member.
“We also want the courts to know that we too have rights and that rights over our properties must be respected as many of the tenants are building on our property willy-nilly and we have become helpless.”
