Alex folk urged to fend off hunger through direct selling
Direct selling opportunities can be a lifeline for the poverty-stricken community of Alexandra so they can fend off hunger and be able to put food on the table.
The newly formed Alexandra NGO Foundation (Angof) has struck a partnership with Network Superstars to create direct selling opportunities for the unemployed folk in the township.
Angof founder and president Patrick Baloyi said the aim of the partnership is to ensure that the unemployed in the township will no longer have to sleep on an empty stomach as they can start small, direct-selling businesses to fend off hunger.

Speaking at his Angof office at the corner of 20th Avenue and Rev Sam Buti Street, Baloyi, who has been in the philanthropy business for many years now, said the partnership with Network Superstars was in line with Angof’s founding principles of ‘not dishing out a fish to the poor but teaching them how to fish’.
“We would like to see our people catching the fish themselves as opposed to being given fish all the time. In this way, we shall be empowering them and ensure they can self-sustain themselves without waiting for someone to feel pity and hand out a fish to them all the time.”

Network Superstars founder Matthew Clarke said his organisation manufactures top-quality fine perfumes which interested Alex community members can buy at discounted prices for resale at a profit.
Those who join the network of direct sellers can attend free training sessions on the products and tips on how to go about selling the products, said Clarke. He added that this was not a new concept as it works along the same principles as Avon, Justine and others.
