A house catches fire in Alex as a result of a power outage

Alex's philanthropist Linda Twala donates to other fire victims.

Residents believe the fire that gutted a house at the corner of 16th Avenue and Hofmeyr Street was due to a transformer that exploded and left them with no electricity for days.

Resident Katherine Maswanganyi said, “We had been without power since July 6 and when I left on the morning of July 10 there was no power. I only came back when the fire had stopped [and] told by the neighbours that the electricity came back and immediately my house caught fire.”

Both the bedroom and bathroom of Maswanganyi’s house were destroyed by the fire, including her important documents and IDs

“After the transformer was fixed, we noticed that the electricity was weak since it made noises when we turned it on, so we decided to turn it off until it was fully turned back on. At that point, we noticed that there was a home already on fire,” said her neighbour who did not want to be named.

Alex legend and philanthropist Bab’Linda Twala visited the Maswanganyi’s to check the damage and donated food and blankets.

“The situation here is so bad. I came to ask for the sizes of the children so I can bring them clothes too. We urge anyone who can donate to lend a hand, the children are between the ages of four and 12,” Twala said.
