Alex Mall marks five years in style

Alex Mall, which was opened in 2018, marked its fifth anniversary with various projects themed around the five years it was celebrating.

Alex Mall marked its fifth anniversary of existence this year by running various community projects whose theme was threaded around the five-year celebrations.
The mall’s marketing manager Ntokozo Bophela said the projects were all done in five’s and these included the Back2School project, Valentine’s Day treat for romantic couples, the Mother’s Day treat for deserving mothers, the Face of the Alex Mall pageant, Father’s Day and Youth Month celebrations.

For the Back2School campaign, Bophela said the mall sponsored branded school bags for five schools in Alexandra.
For the Valentine’s Day project, five lucky couples were chosen through a competition run on the mall’s Facebook page and were treated to a romatic dinner at The Establishment in the mall. For Mothers’ Day, five queen mothers also chosen through the Facebook page, enjoyed a full day’s pampering at the African Unique Trend Salon.
For the annual Face of Alex Mall pageant, she said they took an NGO-inclusive approach in which the top five finalists of the beauty contest each identified a local NGO that they felt was doing a sterling job in the community.

The finalists were tasked with presenting the work of their chosen NGO to a panel of judges for a chance to win an undisclosed cash prize for themselves and their NGOs, which Bophela described as a goodwill gesture for the charity workers in the community.
June was no different for Father’s Day as five winners of the Facebook competition were treated to sumptuous lunches with their dads at various eateries in the mall.
Bophela said the Youth Month celebration even went bigger, with a Youth SMME Day which she described as the most exciting of all the projects that was designed to support youth-owned businesses in the township.

“Unemployment and economic development remains a priority concern for our community and Alex Mall went out of way and contributed a whopping R20 000 towards sustaining, expanding and developing five local SMMEs.
“A call for entries was issued at the beginning of Youth Month through our Facebook page for SMMEs needing a financial injection to stay afloat and access to markets, among other operational elements.

“Entrants were required to drop a one-minute video telling us about their products, services and challenges, and how the cash injection could help boost their businesses. This applied only to formally registered businesses, youth-owned and managed, and only Alexandra-based operations and the number of youth they employ.”
Thirty-two entries were received and the five winners each received a proportionate share of the R20 000 in prize money. “It is encouraging to see that the youth are not only in despair but are taking active steps to shape their future.”
