Joburg City employees get rousing send-off to the Comrades Marathon in Pietermaritzburg
Employees of the City of Johannesburg were given a rousing send-off to the 2022 Comrades Marathon in Pietermaritzburg which takes place on August 28.
The City of Johannesburg bid farewell to 46 of its employees that will be participating in ‘The Ultimate Human Race’ as the Comrades Marathon is known which will take place in Pietermaritzburg on August 28.
On hand to bid them farewell was the Executive Mayor of the City, Dr Mpho Phalatse, and her MMC for Community Development Ronald Harris, both of whom applauded the runners but specifically singled out Gregory Mackett who, at age 64, will be looking forward to his 28th finish of the Comrades.
“I was a poor athlete or sports person in general and hence I concentrated on my academic studies but that said, not all of us can be sports people and one just needs to tap into his or her best talents and pursue that to the hilt,” Phalatse said.

“I want to wish you all of the best in the Comrades and call on you to represent the city well and I look forward to watch you from the comfort of my couch as I can hardly run even a 5km race.
“Next time we will try and organise a uniform so we can easily identify you among the multitude of runners on the day,” she added. The mayor also announced the launch of a health and fitness programme soon for the residents of the city to be known as the Golden Walks.
For his part, Harris wished the runners well on the down run [which is from Pietermaritzburg to Durban] which is considered the toughest. The athletes depart from Johannesburg for Pietermaritzburg on August 25.
