The founder of the Itlokomeleng Old Age home in Alexandra Dr Marjorie Manganye was thrown a surprise birthday party organised for her by the board, staff, family and friends of the home on February 1.
Manganye, who was honoured with a doctorate for her selfless work within the community of Alexandra that spans more than four decades, turned 92 years old this year and ‘still looked and felt as fit as a fiddle’.
She normally celebrates her birthday with one of the residents of the home, Susan Mini, who turned 89 this year and happens to share the same birthday with Dr Manganye. She has been living at the home for the past 17 years.

Guests at the party included Father Jeffrey Madondo of the St Huberts Roman Catholic Church in Alexandra, Alexandra Police Station commander Brigadier Lindiwe Magudulela, Alex born Gauteng MEC for who was on video and Mme Nkepile Mabuse, a former uMkhonto weSizwe freedom fighter.
Well-known Alex born husband and wife music duo Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbuli, who could not make it due to other commitments, also sent their messages of goodwill to the ‘birthday girl’.

Addressing her guests, Dr Manganye said ‘what keeps me young and going at age 92 is the love and support I get from everyone around me and my family but above all, its the grace of the Almighty who continues to bless me each and every day’.
“The Almighty also gives me the grace to continue to serve my community at this advanced age and that is priceless and I am trully humbled,” she said.
