A touch of heavenly massage brings muscle relief to the elderly

Alexandras elderly came out in numbers to the Old Age and Disability Massage Day event held at the Phuthaditjaba Care.

Alexandra’s elderly came out in numbers to the Old Age and Disability Massage Day event held at the Phuthaditjaba Care of the Aged on March 26.

The massage day was to promote the benefits of massage therapy for elders and to raise awareness about the importance of self-care and relaxation for this age group.

A social worker of the Phuthaditjaba Centre, Palesa Lehoke said they collaborated with the founder and CEO of Heavenly Relaxation Spa Xolile Khubheka.

“The elders come here four days a week and do their activities such as exercising and choir. Our elders work very hard and do not go for massages and spa treatments, so we thought this would be the best event for them to get a massage for their bodies to relax. They have been serving others, now it is time for them to be served as well,” Lehoke said.

Khubheka said she enjoyed working with the elders and providing them with massages because she believed they were the people who most needed it.

“Starting a spa in Alex and providing a massage service was just to provide the culture of massage to us black people because we work very hard and become stressed so our bodies need to relax.

“I had an amazing experience working with the elders because that is when I realised that there are certain areas of the body that need our attention as massage therapists. These areas are shoulders, back, knees and toes.”

After the event, the elders were glowing with happiness. They had spent the day being pampered, getting their nails done and it was clear that they enjoyed every moment of it.

One of the elders Elsie Baloyi said, “We are grateful for this day because this massage will make us feel young as we sometimes experience body ailments.”
