Community Indaba reveals politicians visions for Alex’s Future

Alex residents expressed discomfort with the prospect of being moved from their township to be settled elsewhere as proposed at the indaba.

Alexandra has no land that can be used for development or human settlement because the township has no land of its own.

These are the words of the deputy chair of the ANC’s Zone 13 Kgoerano Kekana. She was speaking at a Community Indaba on land redistribution and human settlement meeting hosted by the Alexandra Peace Ambassadors at Sankopano on May 2.

Kekana said the only solution to the issue of land redistribution or human settlement was to establish another township outside of Alex.

“There can’t be anything that can be done in Alex besides having a proclamation of a township that can be established which will be an extension of Alex.

“The reality is that there is no land around Alex, so we need to find land even if it is outside Alex and the residents must accept that they will no longer be staying in Alex. Still, an extension of Alex will be established somewhere else in the city,” Kekana said.

The Congress of the People Gauteng premier candidate Tom Mofokeng said, “People who need to be removed from Alex must agree and we have a solution with the South Rand Farm because that is the only place where more than 30 000 houses could be built, as it is the only place that has land available.

“For those who need to upgrade, it is also in our mandate to help develop the township to ensure that everybody has a home that they can be proud of.”

The All Citizens Party head of campaign Lufuno Gogoro said, “There is a land called South Rand Farm… some of the Alexandra residents have been part of our struggle when we invaded the land in 2016. We want some residents to be moved to that area where 45 000 houses will be built.

“The only delay is the political game between the political parties so once that is resolved, we will service the land and allocate people. We will build offices, factories and manufacturing firms so that when we move people, we also offer them jobs so they can build houses of their choice.

“We will build houses for those who cannot work but we aim to encourage people to be not dependent on the State but the State should play a role in capacitating everyone.”
Thabo Mopasi of Alexandra Peace Ambassadors concluded, “Alexandra Peace Ambassadors would like to thank all political parties that came and honoured the invitation of land and human settlement during the Community Indaba for the people of Alexandra township.”
