The queue was long at the Alexandra High School voting station, but the mood was festive. Residents of all ages, from the youth to elderly citizens, waited patiently to cast their votes. The school’s grounds were bustling with activity, with many residents chatting and laughing while waiting for their turn to vote.

Agnes Mapheto said, “As a young person and a first-time voter, I am excited that I’ve cast my vote after 30 years of democracy. I want this issue of poor service delivery to end, and speaking on behalf of the youth we want free education. We are fed up with corruption and old people who do not want to retire in parliament.”

Despite the long queues, residents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have their voices heard. Many expressed how they feel about casting their votes after 30 years of democracy and the change they look forward to after the elections.

Nonceba Neti said, “I am happy to vote because I know my vote will make a difference in society. We have 30 years of democracy but we are still suffering as blacks. For 30 years, our freedom is not free because there are still no jobs. I wish this election could differ from previous elections because we are tired of empty promises.”

Another resident Bongumusa Mchunu said they plead to the government that is going to win the 2024 elections to end load-shedding and poor service delivery in Alexandra.

“We want the government to build RDPs for the residents of Alexandra because there are a lot of shacks in the township, which puts our lives at risk. I want the government to demolish and rebuild the Madala Hostel because the walls may fall anytime from now. We are tired of load-shedding and poor service delivery.”
