The piling rubbish is a result of the ongoing Pikitup strike by some of its casual workers who are demanding to be offered permanent employment in the City of Johannesburg’s waste collection entity. One of the concerned residents is the secretary general of the Alex Water, Sanitation and Environmental Forum Thabo Mopasi, who has called for a speedy resolution to strike.

“As things stand now, this strike poses a serious health hazard to the community of this township and the sooner it is resolved the better,” Mopasi said. He urged MMC for Environment, Water and Sanitation Jack Sekwala to intervene in the ongoing strike.
