Joyous Grandparents’ Day celebration at St Hubert
Alexandra’s elderly came out in numbers to the Grandparents’ Day held at St Hubert Catholic Church.
St Hubert Catholic Church transformed into a hub of joy and camaraderie on July 31 as it hosted a memorable Grandparents’ Day celebration attracting over 50 elderly attendees.
The event was made possible through the collaboration of Ageing with Wisdom, St Hubert, Gogo Give Smile, the City of Johannesburg, and Can Grow, with a common mission to honour and embrace the elderly, reminding them that they are cherished and never forgotten.

The gathering was filled to the brim with affection and warmth as the elderly interacted, shared stories, and celebrated their lives, creating an atmosphere of joy.
Ageing with Wisdom chairperson Maki Makunyane expressed gratitude for the turnout and the collaborative efforts that made the event possible.
“Today is not just about celebration, it’s a reminder to our elderly community that they are valued and loved. We must continue to advocate for their well-being and ensure they feel supported at every stage of their lives,” she said.

Ageing with Wisdom secretary Mamoraka Mogane said with this event they want to raise awareness for the elderly not to think that, as they are pensioners, their lives are basically over.
“We want our elderly to know that life begins at their age. They should not lock themselves indoors, because this is when fun begins, without having to worry about debts and having to take care of your children because they are grownups.
“Events like this not only allow us to celebrate our seniors but also to reinforce our commitment to their welfare. Each elderly individual has stories and wisdom that deserve to be acknowledged, and today serves as a powerful reminder of their contributions to our society,” Mogane said.
A highlight of the day was the recognition of a beloved figure in the community Moses Maimela who together with his late wife, Dorin Maimela, dedicated their lives to supporting the elderly through the Tswelopele Senior Citizens Club.

The organisation has been instrumental in offering various activities to Alexandra’s elderly, including gym sessions, farming initiatives, tours, sewing classes, and culinary lessons.
Maimela reflected on the journey he and his wife undertook. “Our mission has always been to uplift our elderly, providing them with not just activities but also a sense of purpose and belonging.
“Today, I stand here honoured to carry forward Dorin’s legacy alongside all of you who believe in empowering our elderly community,” Maimela said.
