Is there hope after matric in Alex post-2025 asks Rays of Hope.
Muziwethu Zwane, Rays of Hope CEO suggests adopting a holistic approach that goes beyond traditional education that they refer to as a Whole Child Model that supports children in all aspects of their lives.
As the national class of matriculants currently tackle the last leg of their journey through higher basic education, concern has been raised over the readiness of communities such as Alexandra to overcome challenges persistently impacting learners’ progress.

Rays of Hope CEO Muziwethu Zwane, in a reflective statement issued on November 13, addressed some of the issues that impose additional weights onto the shoulders of school learners in the community. These include classroom overcrowding, exposure to community and domestic abuse – and the crippling effects these have on children’s mental and emotional well-being.
“How can we expect children to learn and perform well in their exams with the weight of these burdens hanging over them? It is important that we lay a foundation for long-term transformation by recognising that success starts from a child’s earliest years and continues well into adulthood,” Zwane said.
“Research consistently highlights the importance of one-on-one attention between teacher and student in promoting academic success and emotional well-being. How can this happen when classes overflow with 70 to 80 learners and more to just one teacher? Our focus as a nation needs to shift from applying the band-aid approach to more strategic interventions at the grassroots level to achieve the sustainable and [fair] educational system we need.”

Zwane pointed out that fixing these challenges was the reason behind Rays of Hope’s Whole Child Model initiative, which aimed to support young people in all parts of life.
“This means children are not just seen as learners, but as individuals within a broader family and community context. From ensuring nutritional needs are met to supporting emotional well-being, the model offers a horizontal and vertical approach that surrounds each child with comprehensive care.”
He issued a call to action for businesses, educators, and community members to rally around long-term solutions that uplift learners, their families, and communities.
“Only by working together can we turn these educational challenges into opportunities for growth and success. Support us by funding one of these initiatives that, in turn, develop this community.”
