Alexandra High
At Alex High, a jovial teacher Boitumelo Morapedi celebrated his geography matric class achieving nine distinctions in the subject.
Morapedi explained that he got permission from the school’s governing body to host geography matriculants at the school for a school-based intervention camp programme to support learning.

“We hosted learners here at the school, where they slept from July to September before they wrote their preliminaries – and most of them improved,” said Morapedi. “That’s when I started announcing that there would be more learners with distinctions in geography.”
The initiative paid off for his Class of 2024.
“Lucky enough, we got nine distinctions, with a lot of level five and six passes – so the quality [of subject passes] is amazing. We improved from a 70% subject pass rate in 2023. Because of the camp, we have an 87% subject pass rate, which is even higher than the school’s overall average.”

Realogile High
Spirits were high at Realogile High School on the day as learners came to collect their matric certificates. Several matriculants at the top-performing school were asked to share their plans for the year and to predict where they would be in life over the next decade.
Obedience Ramadzhia shared his plan to go study psychology at the University of Western Cape towards someday playing his own role in helping members of the Alex community.

“I’d like to empower people, prevent suicide and teenage pregnancy, and to understand the minds of the youth,” Obedience said.
Here is what two of his classmates had to say:
Alicia Nengwekhulu matriculated with distinctions in life sciences, English, Tshivenda and life orientation: I plan to study computer sciences this year. I want to see myself owning my own tech company someday soon.
Tshepang Kekana: For this year, I see myself in varsity, staying in res, and enjoying university life. Based on my results, in five years I’ll either be an engineer, a doctor, or a nurse, depending on my score.
Marlboro Gardens High School
A stone’s throw from Alexandra, in the neighbouring community of Marlboro Gardens, the local high school attained a whopping 98.9% pass rate, matriculating the most learners from both communities in the Johannesburg East District 9 schooling region.
