Johannesburg’s Ombudsman launches citizen information clinic to enhance service delivery
The office of the Ombudsman is transforming service delivery through its citizen information clinic, aiming to raise awareness about citizens rights and how to access essential municipal services in their community.
The office of the Ombudsman for the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) launched the fourth leg of its seven-week citizen information clinics programme at the Danie van Zyl Community Centre.
The initiative, themed: Here to Hear You, aims to educate residents about their constitutional rights to access equitable and efficient basic municipal services. Advocate Siduduzo Gumede, the Johannesburg Ombudsman, emphasized the importance of effective service delivery as a catalyst for change.

“By creating platforms, such as our clinics, we can bridge the gap between the city and its constituencies,” he stated. Gumede expressed hope that this year’s clinics would attract even more participants than last year, as the office expands its regional outreach to enhance service delivery within the Johannesburg Metro.
The initiative is designed to be inclusive, with services available in most of the official languages. Additionally, the Ombudsman’s team reaches out to the elderly by offering home visits to assist with lodging complaints upon request.

“We are truly an Ombudsman that puts people at the heart of what we do,” Gumede added. The office of the Ombudsman collaborates with various departments and entities, including Human Settlement, Public Safety, Pikitup, Metrobus, and the Public Protector of South Africa, to consolidate services under one roof.
Gumede noted that the initiative has already shown signs of success, stating: “I think that it is bearing fruit. I like the reception that we are getting from senior leadership. Because when we speak, they listen. It shows that there is a level of trust between senior leadership and the office of the Ombudsman. It is good for the community as well.”
He highlighted the importance of sustaining these efforts throughout the year to properly assess their impact.
Sello Lemao, the regional director of Region B, also attended the event and provided insights into service delivery challenges. He pointed out that the department’s vision acknowledges the impact of massive urbanization, capacity building, and deteriorating governance on local service delivery, which remains a primary responsibility of local government.
The citizen information clinics programme continues as part of a broader effort to promote active citizenry and ensure that residents are informed of the rights and services available to them.
