Alexandra Field Band shapes futures through music

Field Band is equipping young people with life skills that prepare them for success.

The Alexandra Field Band has shaped the futures of young people in Alexandra.
Former band members have gone on to become artists and have released albums.

According to the band’s programme manager Phumzile Thwala, some return as young adults to run the programme, passing on their expertise in dance, musical instruments, and this cycle of empowerment ensures that the skills acquired continue to benefit future generations.

She said she had witnessed the personal growth of young people who had joined when they were children. “People who joined years ago come back and say, ‘This is what we learned from you, and your teachings are unforgettable,” she said.

Thwala added the band served as a space where young people learnt valuable life skills through the power of rhythm and melody. “We believe in using music as a medium to teach life skills. Children learn how to play instruments, but at the same time, they also develop the ability to navigate real-life challenges.”

She said they also ran an inclusive music programme that gave opportunities to children living with disabilities. “We can help them and channel them into spaces where they will be able to get help, when they are part of us.”

Beyond music, the Alexandra Field Band addresses critical social issues affecting youth, including gender-based violence, bullying, and LGBTQIA+ awareness.
Field band members not only learn how to play instruments, but they also learn valuable life skills that set them up for success. “If a child is learning how to play an instrument, they also learn about how to deal with life challenges.”
