Fixes on 10th Road in Kew are done, but residents demand faster, long-term solutions

Johannesburg Road Agency has completed long-overdue repairs on 10th Road in Kew, but residents say they want more than just last-minute fixes, they want consistent, proactive road maintenance.

After weeks of delays and mounting frustration, Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) has completed the much-needed repairs on 10th Road in Kew, but, while the road has been restored, residents say it’s time for the agency to adopt a more proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance.

The project, which was initially scheduled to be completed by July 4, missed its original deadline due to unforeseen circumstances. JRA did, however, manage to meet its revised commitment of July 11, completing the filling of deep potholes and final resurfacing that had previously been left unfinished.

While the work brings short-term relief, many locals are now turning their attention to the long-term reliability of public service delivery.

Thandi Nkosi, a Kew resident who had previously raised concerns about road safety, said: “I’m just glad they finally did it. It’s been a safety risk for months. I really hope they keep up with maintenance this time and don’t let it fall apart again.”

Taxi driver Sandile Nzama, who uses the road daily, shared a similar view. “The road looks much better now, and I can drive through without dodging potholes. It’s good that JRA came through in the end, but I think residents deserve more proactive service, not just last-minute fixes.”

The condition of 10th Road had become a growing concern for both commuters and pedestrians, with residents frequently reporting near-miss incidents due to crumbling surfaces.
