Suspects in DJ Sumbody’s murder linked to multiple high-profile cases

Police spokesperson says firearms used in the murder of Armand Swart are linked to 10 high-profile cases of murder and attempted murder, including the killing of DJ Sumbody.

Four men accused of murdering Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody, and his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, have been linked to a string of violent crimes, including the killing of engineer Armand Swart and other high-profile cases. This was revealed by Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe shortly after the suspects’ appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on July 22.

The suspects – Katiso Molefe, Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Michael Pule Tau – are facing charges of murder and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Their case has been postponed to July 29 to allow the state to investigate new information it said has emerged ahead of a formal bail application.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane noted that the postponement stems from Molefe’s intention to apply for bail. “As the state, we were not ready to proceed. We are finalising the investigation in terms of the bail application that must be heard by the court. So, we have been granted the opportunity to conclude those investigations.”

Meanwhile, the defence attorneys for Kekana, Mabusela, and Tau confirmed their clients have no intentions to apply for bail.

According to Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, Gauteng Organised Crime detectives arrested Kekana, Tau, and Mabusela within three hours of Swart’s murder, on April 17, 2024, outside his workplace in Vereeniging. Molefe was arrested after the SAPS Political Killings Task Team was enlisted to help the detectives with the investigation in December 2024.

During Kekana, Tau, and Mabusela’s arrest, police seized three pistols and an AK-47. These were taken for ballistics testing, but their link to the other high-profile cases, including DJ Sumbody’s death, was only established after the SAPS Political Killings Task Team took them for a second opinion ballistics test.

“Those firearms came back positive on the case of DJ Sumbody. All four firearms, including the AK-47, are linked to at least 10 high-profile cases, which include murder and attempted murder,” Mathe noted.

Although there is no evidence confirming Kekana and Mabusela’s release from police custody since their arrest for Swart’s murder in April 2024, Tau was released on bail, but later violated the conditions of his bail and was re-arrested. While all reports state that the three men should have been in custody, Mathe said that they, along with Molefe, who was out on bail for the murder of Swart, were arrested on July 21.

All four suspects will remain in custody until they make their second appearance on July 29, for Molefe’s formal bail application.
