A 23-year-old woman, Nthabiseng Nzama, has been named as the fifth suspect in Tebogo Thobejane's attempted murder case, and is set to make her second appearance alongside her father on August 26.

She is charged with money laundering and made her first appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on July 22. Following Nzama’s brief appearance in court, Magistrate Reiner Boshoff granted her bail of R10 000. Boshoff said Nzama should appear in court again on August 26, alongside Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, his wife Tsakani Matlala, and two alleged hitmen, Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe addressed the media outside the court, confirming the addition of the fifth suspect in the case. “In the first case, in terms of the attempted murder of Tebogo Thobejane, we have added a fifth suspect who appeared this morning, and has been charged with money laundering. The 23-year-old female is the daughter of one of the hitmen who was arrested in connection with the attempted murder.”
The National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, noted that further details about her alleged actions would be presented in court. “This was just a first appearance…So, much of that information [about her alleged actions] can only be divulged at that stage,” she said.
The court sheets from Matlala’s first appearance on July 11 indicate that Matlala, his wife and Mabusela also face charges of money laundering, which stem from the alleged transfer of funds from Matlala’s business account to the business account of Mabusela’s daughter, (name was not disclosed on the court sheets), and then to the business account of Mabusela. According to the prosecution, the funds were reportedly meant to finance the botched assassination attempt on Thobejane.
The attempt on Thobejane’s life occurred in 2023 on the N1 highway near Sandton. Thobejane and her friend were driving when they were ambushed and their car was shot at multiple times, leaving her friend with a serious injury.
