City returns to Wynberg precinct for renewed service delivery operation

The City of Johannesburg’s fight for a cleaner, safer, and developed Wynberg precinct continues as acting mayor Eunice Mgcina returns to lead another high-impact service delivery blitz in the area.

Shortly after a high-impact service delivery operation swept through the Wynberg precinct, clearing the Pan Africa Shopping Centre and enforcing municipal by-laws, the City of Johannesburg has returned to the area for another operation.

Led by Acting Mayor Eunice Mgcina, the operation is expected to build on the previous campaign’s momentum, targeting persistent urban management challenges.

These include illegal electricity connections, particularly around the nearby informal settlement, waste accumulation, fragmented development, ageing infrastructure, and unregulated street trading.

During the last operation, the city made visible strides in restoring order. The often-congested walkways of Pan Africa Shopping Centre were cleared, and illegal traders were removed.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers maintained a visible presence in the days that followed, deterring the immediate return of informal traders.

Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart previously noted that sustained enforcement would be key to maintaining cleanliness and order in the precinct. However, recent developments suggest a shift in tactics among some traders. While the area remains largely compliant during the day, informal trading has reportedly resumed at night.

In addition to addressing trading violations, JMPD has also intensified efforts to curb illegal parking, targeting motorists who occupy non-designated areas.

As Mgcina, who participated in the previous operation in her former role as MMC for Development Planning, returns to the precinct, further enforcement is anticipated.
