City targets stores around Pan Africa with its large-scale store inspections

As the City of Johannesburg’s acting mayor, Eunice Mgcina, returns to the Wynberg precinct in a high-impact service delivery operation, stores around Pan Africa are feeling the heat.

The City of Johannesburg’s acting mayor, Eunice Mgcina, led high-scale store inspections around Pan Africa Shopping Centre. This was during the city’s second high-impact service delivery in Wynberg in less than three weeks.

Mgcina joined officials from the Department of Environmental Health, the Immigration Unit, and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to inspect shops around the busy Freedom Supermarket section of Pan Africa.

“We wanted to target the shops that are here, especially this part of Freedom Supermarket. We wanted to target the whole of it, but some shops had already closed,” Mgcina said.

She explained that the Immigration Unit would assist in identifying foreign nationals who are in the country illegally, while environmental health inspectors focused on the quality and safety of products being sold.

“We are also inspecting products that are being sold. We have previously had challenges with people bringing foreign products into our country,” she added.

Authorities uncovered shocking hygiene violations at a local butchery, where meat was found stored in crates on the floor and a toilet was located in the same room where food was being prepared.

The same operation also resulted in the arrest of a foreign national running an electronics store, detained by immigration officers. Although he told officers that he is married to a South African national, he was reluctant to share the needed information pertaining to his alleged wife.

The operation follows a recent service delivery blitz in the Wynberg precinct, which cleared congested walkways at Pan Africa Shopping Centre, removed illegal traders, and enforced municipal by-laws.
