Hijackers target e-hailing vehicles in Alexandra

Hijackers in Alexandra lure e-hailing drivers to their desired location by requesting a ride, then pounce, stripping them of their belongings and hijacking their vehicle.

Police say it is becoming increasingly apparent that hijackers in Alexandra are now mostly targeting e-hailing vehicles.

This comes as the Alexandra Police Station records a rise in reported hijacking cases involving e-hailing drivers.

Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said, just last week they had at least three cases of this nature. While police have clamped down on some suspects, the scope of the crisis is wider. “We arrested four suspects, three males and a female, but even when they were arrested, this thing continued.”

Ngubane explained that the same modus operandi was witnessed in each case, showing that more than four people are involved in the syndicate. Suspects lure drivers to their desired location by making use of e-hailing applications. The suspects request a ride, like normal customers, and when the driver arrives, they pounce, strip him of his belongings, and take his car.

Although Ngubane did not mention any reported injuries linked to these incidents, he warned that the suspects are armed, and this makes the situation even more dangerous.

He flagged this as a growing trend that local police are grappling with, saying that there are no specific hotspots identified, because incidents occur across Alexandra, both day and night.

Ngubane further urged motorists and e-hailing drivers to be on high alert to avoid falling victim to hijacking, stressing that vigilance and caution are critical, especially during the festive season when criminal activity often spikes.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and they are working to dismantle the syndicate behind these crimes. “If they carry on hijacking people. We will catch them.”
