Enjoy festive season, but be safe, urges councillor

Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema encourages residents to embrace the festive spirit with joy and family time, but reminds them to stay vigilant against crime.

As scores of the country’s workforce take a well-needed break from their everyday duties, the festive season is poised to give them that rare moment of reprieve after a long year.

For many, December is a time to reconnect with loved ones, travel, and celebrate milestones.

Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema has urged residents to embrace the spirit of the season, marked by cheerfulness and enjoyment, but stressed that they ought to be safe. “Festive seasons are seasons where we need to be happy. We have to bond with our families, and others go to holidays. The biggest message that I want to send to my community is that they should be safe.”

Marema cautioned residents not to trust strangers or anyone they suspect may pose a danger. He said the festive season often coincides with increased criminal activity, and urged vigilance. “The world out there is not safe at all. There are issues of crime, the high rate of unemployment and poverty, crime is now growing.”

He encouraged residents to focus on love, family, and togetherness during this period. “I want to encourage every other person, find some love, connect with your people, go visit your families, go on vacations.”

Marema’s message comes at a time when Alexandra, like many other communities, continues to grapple with socioeconomic challenges. He said while the festive season is about joy, it is also about responsibility – ensuring that families return safely from holidays and that communities remain united.

As 2025 draws to a close, his call is for residents to celebrate responsibly, remain cautious, and carry the spirit of unity into the new year.
