Man shot by Fidelity guard believes use of live ammunition was excessive
Sikhumbuzo Molema, who was shot and injured by a Fidelity Security guard at Alex Mall, admits he was heavily intoxicated when he approached a cash–in–transit vehicle – but insists the guard’s response was excessive.
Sikhumbuzo Molema, a father of four, who was shot by a Fidelity Security Guard at Alex Mall in November last year, believes that while he was heavily intoxicated at the time, the guard’s use of live ammunition was excessive.
Molema says he regained consciousness at Edenvale Hospital with no memory of the incident, only later learning that he had been shot in the leg.

A mall official, who asked not to be named, told Alex News that Molema was clinging to a stationary Fidelity cash–in–transit vehicle while visibly intoxicated. The guard reportedly issued warnings, but Molema did not comply, leading to the shooting.
Molema himself confirmed his state of inebriation, but insists the guard should have sought a non–violent resolution. “As long as you don’t see a weapon or anything, there is a security guy in the mall that, if there is a problem, could have been called. Those mall security guys know me. Every day, I pass here from work, and I regularly come to the mall.”

The bullet passed through Molema’s leg without striking bone, but the injury has left him in persistent pain. “Even now, I cannot walk properly because it is too painful. It is difficult for me.”
Beyond the physical toll, Molema says he is struggling with psychological trauma. “Now, I have trauma. Sometimes I just keep quiet and think about it. Even now, I do not have answers. I did not think that one day I would be in this situation.”
Police confirmed that Molema’s case is under investigation. Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane told Alex News that the guard’s firearm was seized for ballistic testing.
Fidelity Services Group said it is co-operating fully with authorities. “At this stage, we are still investigating all the facts and are, therefore, unable to provide further information,” said Charnel Hattingh, the company’s head of marketing and communications. “We remain committed to supporting this investigation.”
