Alex Wolves U14 rugby girls prepare for weekend showdown

Alex Wolves Rugby Club U14 girls are ready to prove themselves at the Golden Lions Rugby Union high-performance session, with fixtures against teams from Kagiso and Krugersdorp set to test their skills and highlight growing rugby talent.

Alex Wolves Rugby Club’s girls are gearing up for a major test this Saturday.

They are heading into the Golden Lions Rugby Union high-performance session in Alberton, which will include multiple teams across Johannesburg.

Coach Bongumenzi Mbatha confirmed that the team will participate in the Golden Lions’ U14 girls’ performance session, before taking part in competitive fixtures. “After the high-performance session, the clubs will play against each other.”

The aspiring rugby stars, who, on Thursday, trained alongside players from higher divisions, will first face a team from Kagiso, followed by another one from Krugersdorp. Mbatha explained that these matches are designed to test the players’ knowledge of the game, and identify those fit enough to slot into the Golden Lions’ system for upcoming tournaments, including the Soncini Sevens, winter games, and summer games scheduled for later this year.

Mbatha expressed confidence in his squad, noting that many of the girls have been nurtured through the club’s Get-Into-Rugby (GIR) programme. “We had them in primary, in our Get-Into-Rugby programme. That programme has been progressive for us. It allows us to have the U13 and U14.”

The GIR system has become a cornerstone of the Wolves’ development pipeline. It allows coaches to train players from a young age and gradually promote them into higher divisions. This ensures that players gain experience and sharpen their skills as they grow.

He emphasised that the GIR programme has been critical in building depth across age groups. “GIR gave us all that age group, from U14, U16 to U18, so that we can compete with other teams out there. Our players are ready to compete with other teams on Saturday.”

With the Wolves’ U14 girls now stepping into the spotlight, Mbatha is convinced that the weekend showdown will show their fitness and competitiveness.
