City hands over 120 title deeds in Ward 105 in Alexandra

The City of Johannesburg MMC for Human Settlements, Anthea Leitch, says these homes should be filled with love, joy, and prosperity for generations to come.

The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Human Settlements, Anthea Leitch, recently handed over 120 title deeds to Alex residents in Ward 105.

She was joined by Ward councillor Tefo Raphadu and the executive director for Human Settlements, Patrick Phophi, and other city officials and residents of Ward 105 to celebrate what Leitch described as a ‘significant moment in the city’s commitment to giving residents ownership of their homes’.

The event marked the distribution of long-awaited title deeds to beneficiaries of state-sponsored RDP houses. She said the title deeds represented not just physical properties but the realisation of dreams, security, and the promise of a brighter future for the recipients.

Leitch acknowledged the ‘patience and resilience’ of recipients at the event which was marked by joyous singing and dancing with the MMC when she also personally visited some of the recipients at their homes.

“Despite the current housing backlog, the City of Johannesburg is committed to addressing this challenge, one family at a time. Each title deed handed out signifies more than just a house; it signifies a place where families will build memories, children will grow up, and communities will thrive,” she said.

The MMC emphasised that homeownership was about empowerment, belonging, and economic opportunities, ensuring that no family in Johannesburg has to live without a roof over their heads.

“The city remains devoted to improving living conditions and will continue to collaborate with communities, stakeholders, and all levels of government to make decent housing a reality,” Leitch added.

As she handed over the title deeds, Leitch reminded everyone that this was part of the journey towards a more inclusive and equitable Johannesburg. “I would like to congratulate each and every one of the beneficiaries today.

“Together, we will continue to build a Johannesburg where every family has a place to call home. Thank you, and may these homes be filled with love, joy, and prosperity for generations to come.”
