Alex’s Bopape strikes gold, defending home turf
Alex’s John Bopape delivered a knockout performance at the Colosseum Combat event to clinch victory over Congolese challenger Jimmy Mabundji.
Local boxer John Bopape (33) emerged victorious against Jimmy Mabundji from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Colosseum Combat event hosted by Warrior Ascent Promotions.
The event was held at Alexandra Stadium on October 19 and Bopape’s performance not only delighted the crowd but also underscored his commitment to representing his community on both national and international stages.

“I am excited that I won this fight as my performance was also great and what excites me the most is that all this happened on my turf,” Bopape said.
Reflecting on the strategy that led him to victory, he said the game plan came together when he entered the ring. “The minute a punch lands on your face, everything changes, but I took it from there and everything came together.”

Bopape faced a challenging opponent in Mabundji, who is known for his relentless forward movement. “The opponent was one hard nut to crack, as he always came forward, and I had to use my jab to keep him at bay, which worked to our advantage.”
Bopape said he usually fights at middleweight (72kg) but for this fight, he fought at a super middleweight (76kg) he felt stronger and more energised.
Throughout the bout, Bopape showcased his defensive skills. “I came out clean as I did not allow my opponent to land any punches or even come closer to me; we boxed him out.
“The support from my community was great, people came in numbers, especially the kids of Alex… I appreciate them a lot because I believed they are the ones who pushed me forward and to never give up.
“I am proud to represent my country locally and internationally, especially my homestead, Alexandra.
“Our focus now is to secure the defence for my South African title and also aim for the WBC African belt as a starting point for a more prestigious world title.”
With a nod to his journey, Bopape highlighted the importance of patience and discipline. “Patience and discipline are the keys to all success. Always be humble because you never know who is looking.”
