Alex gogos and mkhulus have an early Christmas

Alex gogos and mkhulus who are beneficiaries of the Phuthaditjaba Centre were treated to an early Christmas of food parcels donated by Humaniti, an international humanitarian organisation based in Canada.

More than 300 food parcels were distributed to the needy by the township’s foremost philanthropist and community builder Linda Twala and his last-born daughter, Gcina, with the help of local representatives for Humaniti, Shabeer Aziz, and his team.

Aziz said more than 300 food parcels were distributed to the elderly at the centre which he said was the first of its kind for the centre. He hopes this donation will go a long way in alleviating rampant food shortages for the elderly and most vulnerable community members.

Gcina, acknowledging the food shortage in the township, particularly affecting the elderly, said the centre would continue to advocate for more food donations. “I don’t want the elderly to become the forgotten members of our society.

“Every year, we take the gogos and mkhulus on a lifetime trip to Cape Town as they have never been there before and some of them are first-time flyers who will forever cherish the experience,” she said.

Gcina also appealed to the business community to support the gogos and mkhulus trip, saying, “We wish more business people can come on board and support this noble project that supports the poor and elderly of our community.”

Twala, the humanitarian who has become popularly known as the ‘mayor of Alex’, expressed gratitude for the food donation and said he was overjoyed that overseas organisations knew about the plight of the elderly in Alexandra.
