Award-winning actor Presley Chweneyagae dies at 40
Tributes are pouring in for renowned actor Presley Chweneyagae following the announcement of his passing.
Multi-award winning actor Presley Chweneyagae was confirmed dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Chweneyagae rose to fame after starring in the Oscar-nominated, original South African film Tsotsi in 2005. The film was nominated and won in the Foreign Language Film category at the 78th Academy Awards.
Following the unprecedented success of Tsotsi, Chweneyagae continued to expand his portfolio by lending his acting chops to productions such as More Than a Game – a documentary drama film showing the inception of the Makana Football Association at Robben Island, and iNumber Number (Avenged) – an action film starring award-winning actor, S’dumo Mtshali.

South African audiences will fondly remember the actor for his award-winning performance as Thuso ‘Cobra/Cobrizi’ Mokoena in the South African telenovela, The River.
Chweneyagae graced the theatre stage with his talent, performing in Jack in the Box, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as Julius Caesar.
The actor proved his versatility, taking off his actor hat and heading for the director’s seat, when he directed the award-winning CELL NO 4.

Chweneyagae’s agency, MLA, confirmed the news of his passing and lamented the loss of the actor.
“Presley was a longtime and cherished member of the MLA family – more than a client, he was a friend, a mentor to many, and a beacon of creativity and perseverance. His passion for empowering the next generation of artists will remain an integral part of his legacy,” said the agency in a statement.
Details surrounding his death have not been revealed.
Chweneyagae is survived by his wife and children.
