Alleged robbers arrested after high-speed chase and shootout in Marlboro

Trio, believed to be linked to multiple robberies, intercepted following high-speed chase and shootout with police in Marlboro.

Three men, suspected to be behind a spate of house and Rolex robberies across Johannesburg, were arrested on July 20 in Marlboro, after crashing into a tree during a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire with police.

Acting on intelligence from crime intelligence members, authorities were alerted about suspects involved in multiple robberies. According to the SAPS office of the Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the information received by the police was that the suspects were travelling in a white Toyota Corolla. “The information was operationalised and a team of law enforcement officers, comprising of SAPS Crime Intelligence, SAPS Johannesburg K9, SAPS Tracking team, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect, were deployed to be on the lookout for the suspects,” the SAPS statement read.

It further noted that a vehicle matching the description was located in Sandton. When the team attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects sped off. A pursuit and a shootout ensued, culminating in the suspects’ vehicle crashing into a tree.

During the confrontation, two suspects sustained injuries. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, loaded with ammunition, from the vehicle. According to their preliminary investigations, the car had false registration plates.

The suspects face charges for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Additional charges may be laid as investigations continue.

This take down follows a string of similar incidents in Sandton.

A month before, in May, Sandton Chronicle reported that a resident was followed by three suspects after leaving a shopping mall in Bryanston, and then robbed outside their complex on Rivonia Road, the same road in which traffic was halted in April during a shootout between police and armed robbers who were involved in a Sandton City robbery.

Again, in March, four armed robbers were arrested after robbing e-hailing passengers at gun point and taking their valuables.
