Watch: Jobs Seekers’ Movement campaigns to tackle rising unemployment in Alexandra and surrounds
Hope rises against a tide of despair in Alexandra, as SA Jobs Seekers’ Movement takes action by going door-to-door in Sandton, delivering CVs and securing jobs.
The latest quarterly labour force survey (QLFS), released by Statistics South Africa, paints a grim picture of the country’s unemployment crisis, indicating a growing issue that the SA Job Seekers’ Movement intends to tackle.
The survey reveals that the country’s unemployment rate surged to 33.2% in the second quarter of 2025, up 0.3% from 32.9% in the first quarter.

The expanded unemployment rate, including discouraged work-seekers, stands at a staggering 42.9%, a slight decrease from 43.1% in the first quarter, but still serves as a reminder of the unemployed individuals who have given up and lost hope of finding work.

However, job seekers in Alexandra, who are refusing to be discouraged, hit the pavement in a determined effort to reduce the stats. Led by Mthokozisi Khambule, the spokesperson of SA Job Seekers’ Movement, the group has embarked on their third door-to-door campaign for this year, to deliver CVs to companies in Sandton’s Barlow Park. Their goal is to secure employment opportunities for job seekers in the retail space.

“We believe that, in retail, they only need matric, and our job seekers do have matric,” Khambule said. “We are also going to be visiting the neighbouring companies around Sandton.”
Their efforts are not new, nor are they without success. In their recent campaign, the group secured employment for 16 individuals, including eight drivers, four boilermakers, and four upholsterers.
In an earlier campaign, Khambule said they submitted CVs for 60 candidates, resulting in 20 being invited for interviews, though only a portion secured jobs.
Khambule noted a specific case where they submitted ten CVs to the Aluminium and Glass Company, with four drivers passing the required test. “They still need an additional six.”
The organisation is now calling on Alexandra residents to submit CVs to fill 40 open positions for armed guards, where only 20 of 60 candidates from a previous campaign were hired.
