Miss Alexandra Queen says pageantry is a tool for transformation

Thando Motha isn’t just a model with a glittering crown and a sash; she is a force for change and has been leveraging her platform for social transformation.

Thando Motha, the reigning Miss Alexandra Queen, is redefining the role of pageantry.
For her, it is not just about striking an elegant poise, wearing a crown with glittering diamonds, or collecting sashes; it is a transformative platform that empowers young women to rise above their circumstances and rewrite their narratives.

Growing up in Alexandra, a vibrant yet challenging township, Motha witnessed firsthand the obstacles that young people face, including limited resources, a lack of guidance, and a persistent sense of hopelessness.

“In a community like Alexandra, where many girls grow up doubting their worth due to social and economic hardships, pageantry becomes a tool for transformation,” she explained.

“It shifts your attitude from self-doubt to self-belief. It teaches you poise, purpose, and power. And most importantly, it helps you see your identity as something to be proud of, not something to hide or minimise.”

She sources her belief about pageantry from her transformative journey as a model. “It changed me. It reminded me that I am not just a face in the crowd, but a force for change, and I carry that message to every girl I meet.”

She said that pageantry went beyond beauty, noting that it was about discovering one’s voice, building confidence, and rewriting the narrative around one’s identity and capabilities.

Now, Motha uses her platform to advocate for education, mentorship, and self-confidence, creating spaces where young girls can feel supported and inspired to dream beyond their circumstances.

“My advocacy is not just about giving back, it’s about building up, because when the youth of Alexandra are empowered, the entire community rises with them.”

Motha believes that being the reigning queen of Alexandra has offered her more than just a glamorous title, but a platform and a voice that reaches the hearts of young people who may feel hopeless.

“It allows me to be a visible example that dreams are valid, even in a community where opportunities often feel out of reach.”
She uses the crown to transform society by planting seeds of hope, confidence, and purpose in every young person she encounters.
