Blue Birds coach Malvin Khumalo welcomed the win against Diepkloof, who currently top the league standings. He said his side started brightly, creating several early chances but failing to convert. “We should have killed the game in the first half. We missed three open opportunities, but we had a good game from the get-go.”
At half time, Khumalo got an opportunity to address defensive vulnerabilities, which had the potential to cost them the game. “Our centre backs were opening too wide and creating spaces. The opponents almost punished us from there.”
To tighten his side’s defence, he made a tactical shift, pulling two key attackers, Tshiamo Sekgwatle and Sizakele Khumalo, into the backline. While the move risked weakening the frontline, he believed it was necessary to contain Diepkloof’s pace and attacking threat. The decision paid off early, as Sizakele went head-to-head with one of Diepkloof’s quick-footed and talented attacking player, keeping her attacks at bay.

“We had to sacrifice Sizakele, our best attacking player, to defend,” said Khumalo. “She won all the battles.” Once confident in his defensive setup, he set his sights on converting the chances they were creating.
Sizakele not only held the line defensively after being pulled to the backline; she also contributed to the winning goal. After fighting and eventually winning the ball from the opposition, she delivered a stellar cross to Moyahabo Khumalo, who scored.
“We had to convert the chances that were creating,” Khumalo noted, “because we were creating a lot of chances. We could have scored more, but this 1–0 gives us three points. It is what matters. We are happy that we have kept a clean sheet.”
