Run Alex’s Themba Bila to take on 10km race in Botswana
Themba Bila is set to fly the Watermelon Gang flag high in a 10km race in Botswana.
Run Alex Athletic Club’s Themba Bila is set to represent the Watermelon Gang in an international 10km race in Botswana on November 15.
The club, also known as the Watermelon Gang, noted that this is a huge moment for the Alex-based runner, known for his #IrunWithThemba initiative. It also marks a proud milestone for the club, as he will be flying their flag high.
“It means a lot to me and the Watermelon Gang. This is what hard work and dedication look like—to go out of the country to represent both the team and South Africa,” he shared.
While covering a 10km distance under 80 minutes may seem daunting for others, Bila remains optimistic that he will not only achieve it but also enjoy the experience. “This one is going to be fun,” he noted.

Bila said the invitation to participate on the international stage followed Run Alex’s strong domestic form. “We got an invite from the club in Botswana because of our vibe here in South Africa, and we are going there to build relationships with them,” he explained.
As he prepares to leave for Botswana, the runner feels confident and well prepared. “We have prepared for it very well, and we are going there to stick to the plan,” Bila confirmed.
He indicated that for the club, the fixture is strategic. It is not only about racing but also about building relationships for the benefit of the upcoming generation of athletes.
“We intend to build a strong relationship with them so that we can open doors for the new generation that is coming after us, and open doors for South African clubs that we run with,” he said.
