MMC and Johannesburg Roads Agency spearhead Operation Lungisa to give Alex roads much needed attention

Speaking during Operation Lungisa in Alexandra on Wednesday, Ward 107 councillor Floyd Ngwenya said Alexandra’s infrastructural challenges must be addressed consistently, even in the absence of city officials.

The City of Johannesburg has intensified efforts to repair Alexandra’s battered infrastructure, one ward at a time.

It stepped up service delivery operations in the area, with a particular focus on resurfacing tar roads, patching potholes, and enhancing road markings across several wards.

On Wednesday, just a few weeks after the MMC for Development Planning led a blitz in Alexandra, another operation was launched under the banner of Operation Lungisa. Spearheaded by MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene, alongside Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) board member and CEO Zweli Nyathi, the initiative targeted wards 75, 76, and 107.

Ward 107 councillor Floyd Ngwenya highlighted the dire state of roads, stressing that Roosevelt Street remains nearly impassable due to flowing water on the tar. “Cars cannot drive through because of the water here. JRA is on the ground with councillors to address these issues. We are happy that the MMC and JRA team are here.”

Ngwenya called for continuity, urging that work should go on, even in the absence of political leadership. “We are saying even when the MMC has left, we still want JRA to be on the ground, dealing with the issues that we have here in Alexandra.”

He said, as the rainy season sets in, storm water drainage systems must function properly to prevent potholes on the road. In a post on social media, the office of the transport MMC said this was an effort to repair the township’s road infrastructure and restore dignity to the community.

Yet, while progress on roads is visible, frustrations over electricity outages threaten to overshadow the city’s gains. These outages have led residents to stage protests across numerous streets in Alexandra, including Sam Buti, Alfred Nzo, and Florence Moposho roads, leaving behind remnants of burnt tyres and wood on the road.
