Fidelity security guard faces charges after Alex Mall shooting

Police say the Fidelity Cash Solutions security guard who shot and injured a man at Alex Mall faces an attempted murder charge.

A Fidelity Cash Solutions security guard faces attempted murder charges following the Alex Mall shooting incident.

Alex Police Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said the case of the Fidelity security guard who shot and injured a man at Alex Mall last week is being investigated as an attempted murder case.

“It is an attempted murder. The victim is still in hospital and the suspect was questioned by the detectives. The firearm was taken for ballistic tests.”

Reports indicate that on November 26, the guard allegedly shot a man who was approaching the cash-in-transit van parked near one of the entrances of the mall. “The man was approaching them, that is why [the security guard] used the firearm. Remember, it is that time of the festive season. So, when a person comes close, they think that that person wants to disarm them.”

Although initial reports on social media suggested that the victim was mentally unstable, Ngubane said this has not yet been confirmed as investigations are currently underway.

He also confirmed that police were able to make contact with the family of the victim after the incident.

When Alex News reached out to Fidelity Services Group, the parent company of Fidelity Cash Solutions, the company’s head of marketing and communications, Charnel Hattingh, said they are working closely with police, but are unable to provide further information.

“At this stage, we are still investigating all the facts and are therefore unable to provide further information. We remain fully committed to supporting this investigation.”

Alex Mall also acknowledged the incident, and reassured shoppers that their safety remains a priority. “Your safety remains our top priority, and we will continue to provide updates as received,” their statement read.

As investigations continue, Ngubane said the guard will have to attend court proceedings.
