Top three performing high schools in Alex receive Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust prizes

Three Alexandra high schools, which excelled in their 2025 matric examinations, have been honoured with Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust awards and prizes.

Learners at Minerva Secondary School, a school once marred by underperformance and violence, burst into celebration as principal Nontsikelelo Tsatsi went up the stage to collect the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust (VTET) prize for achieving a historic 97% in their 2025 matric examinations.

The prize, worth R200 000 for the school, is a historic achievement that Tsatsi attributed to the dedication of the teachers. “Against all odds, the educators and the management of the schools worked hard and delivered. Our mandate is very clear, as the employees of the department, it is to change the lives of these learners.”

She emphasised that it is because of the dedication of teachers in Alexandra that the learners are where they are today.

Deputy President of South Africa Paul Mashatile, a patron of the VTET, extended his warm congratulations to Alexandra’s Class of 2025, as well as their schools, for their academic performance in the 2025 examinations.

Mashatile noted that of the five high schools in Alexandra, four performed well above 80% and two above 90%. “This overall improvement signals growing stability across the majority of our schools. Our collective aspiration remains clear: All schools must perform above 90%, with none falling below 80%.”

He emphasised that the leadership and partnership of the school principals are central to the success of the VTET initiatives, which directly impact the lives of Alexandra learners. “We value their commitment, insight, and stewardship, and we express our sincere appreciation.”

Speaking on behalf of all educators in Alex, Tsatsi expressed gratitude to the trust, noting that, for educators, it is fulfilling to see a child receiving an award, knowing very well they played a crucial role in helping that child get there.
