Business owner fatally shot in robbery on 2nd Avenue, Alexandra

Police confirmed that a business owner was killed after being shot four times on 2nd Avenue in Alexandra on Thursday morning.

A 60-year-old businessman, who operated around Pan Africa Shopping Centre, was shot and killed on 2nd Avenue in Alexandra in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police confirmed that the man was shot four times in what appears to be a robbery. The suspects, whose number has not yet been confirmed, fled with his money.

Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said the victim had left his home around 04:45 to buy stock for his business. “He owns a small business at Pan, so he was going to stock with R1 200.”

Five cartridges were found at the scene, and Ngubane revealed that evidence suggests there may have been a scuffle before the fatal shooting. “At the crime scene, you can see that this old man was fighting.”

He confirmed that the deceased sustained multiple gunshot wounds. “The bullet wounds, one was in the chest, one in the back and two in the right hip.”

Police have opened a murder case, and investigations are underway. At this stage, no suspects or witnesses have been identified.

Ngubane said that while robberies in the early hours of the morning, where people are targeted going to work, have been recorded in Alexandra, this is the first time they have recorded a case of murder linked to such incidents.
