Hailstorm wreaks havoc in Alexandra

Heavy rainfall left Madopi Road, near Alex Mall, impassable on Tuesday, flooding nearby homes and shops.

Heavy rainfall left Madopi Road, near Alex Mall, completely impassable, flooding homes and a shop in Alexandra.

The downpour, accompanied by massive hail, blanketed several streets, including Madopi Road, in a thick layer of ice that obstructed traffic. Motorists along Sheridan Road, which extends from Alex Mall, were forced to seek alternative routes as driving conditions became hazardous. The accumulation also trapped water in several yards.

Affected resident Ronnie Chauke, owner of Big Tuck Shop, said his store was filled with water along with several adjacent rooms. “All of the rooms on the side of the store were flooded. They were all affected.” While his shop escaped damage, Chauke noted that residents’ furniture in the flooded rooms was destroyed.
Residents reported that it took less than 20 minutes for the road to be blocked and homes to be affected.

Mahlodi Mohale, a resident in the area, said homes along Sandlana Street were also flooded. “All of these houses were flooded. In some houses the water was almost knee‑deep. It was a disaster.”

Videos seen by Alex News show water seeping into rooms situated even on higher slopes. Mohale explained that hail blocked drainage points, including gaps beneath gates, trapping water inside yards. As the rain continued, the rising water eventually reached levels high enough to breach homes.

Another resident, Lucky Mdakana, who at the time of the storm was not home, said she was unable to return during the storm because of the darkness. “It was very dark. I could not even see the nearby house clearly. It was going to be impossible for me to find my way.” When she eventually returned, she found her bedroom and toilet flooded, with carpets and blankets soaked.

Residents remain concerned that as the hail melts, low‑lying sections of Madopi Road could be submerged in water.
