Community leader urges youth to step up and become active citizens
Community leader and writer Thabo Mopasi is urging young people in Alexandra to move beyond passive frustration, and become active citizens.
Community leader and writer Thabo Mopasi is calling on young people in Alexandra to become active citizens, and to take responsibility for shaping their future.
He emphasised that youth in the community should also assume the responsibility of ensuring that democracy works. “Among other things, which young people must do, is actively take part in the upcoming local government elections.”

In the face of Alexandra’s glaring challenges of service delivery and unemployment, Mopasi noted that youth must play a role in making sure government functions effectively. Just recently, Bokamoso Youth Centre held an event aimed at encouraging young people’s participation in the local government elections. The event shared critical information and conducted mock elections to demonstrate how casting a ballot works.

Mopasi, who was one of the speakers, emphasised the importance of such an event. However, he stressed that young people’s participation in democracy and community life should not be limited to voting.
As a leader who has written many books and numerous letters to Johannesburg officials, he encouraged young people to use their voices creatively. He urged them to harness technology not only for social media, but also for writing books and documenting their own stories. “They have to use their technology to write books. They have to take part in writing their own stories about things that they think would create work for them in the future.”

He believes that storytelling and knowledge-sharing can empower youth and create opportunities in Alexandra, a community where young people have often voiced frustration about limited job prospects.
Mopasi further challenged the youth to take initiative in addressing local needs. He said they should spearhead practical community projects to make a difference. “They must take part in ensuring that they start programmes in the community, such as painting and closing leaks on peoples rooves. When rain comes, people should not be concerned that their homes will be flooded.”
Mopasi made it clear that community development and youth empowerment cannot wait for government alone. He insisted that young people must rise, and become active citizens.
