From grandparents’ love to community care: Palesa Letsoalo’s journey
Palesa Letsoalo has spent more than a decade ensuring Alexandra’s elderly are not forgotten. Her organisation, We Care, stands as proof that grandparents’ love can build lasting change.
For 12 years, Alexandra’s elderly residents have found comfort and support through We Care, an organisation founded by Palesa Letsoalo.
Her work has grown into a lifeline for senior citizens, but, at its core, it remains deeply personal. Letsoalo often reflects on her upbringing, explaining that she was raised by her grandparents. She says they gave her more love than anyone else and shaped the person she is today. Their influence instilled in her a deep respect for the elderly, and she believes her work is a way of giving back to those who laid the foundation for families and communities. “I am who I am today because of them. At least today they can beat their chest and they have taught me well.”
Her decision to establish We Care was driven by that love. She explained that she opened the organisation because of her passion for the elderly, and, over the years, it has become a beacon of hope in Alexandra.

Running the organisation, however, has not been without challenges. Letsoalo admitted that applause from the public does not always translate into practical support. “People applaud you and all, but they do not come with anything. Sometimes you need a place to store the food parcels, and other times you need a car to transport food.” At times, Letsoalo has had to use her own money to ensure food reaches those in need.

Balancing these responsibilities is difficult, but she remains committed. She said she is also grateful for the assistance she receives from City of Johannesburg officials, especially during difficult weather conditions, saying their help has been crucial in keeping the work going.

Recently, We Care hosted an event that brought together more than 90 senior residents for a day of activity and joy. “The event was all about the elderly exercising so that they can keep active. It was also about them feeling loved and appreciated.”
The programme included a fun run, aerobics, and the distribution of food parcels. Letsoalo acknowledged that many older people live with chronic illnesses and do not always get enough physical activity, so the event encouraged them to stay active while also offering companionship and relief from loneliness. Beyond exercise, participants received food parcels, and sanitary products for the children many grandmothers care for.
For Letsoalo, every event is a reminder of the role elderly people play in shaping families. She believes no family rises without the foundation laid by grandparents. Hosting these gatherings is her way of honouring them, and she said there is nothing more fulfilling than pursuing what she is passionate about.
